About SEMS

Student Emergency Medical Services (SEMS) at Arizona State University is a group of ASU students who are trained and certified as Emergency Medical Technician - Basics. We work with the Campus Health Service, the Tempe Fire Department, the ASU Police Department, the PMT Ambulance service, and countless other organizations to provide care for those in need on the ASU-Tempe campus.

The EMTs of SEMS are Nationally Registered EMT-Bs, and are all certified with the State of Arizona - Department of Health Services. Our training is equivalent to that of EMTs on fire engines and ambulances.

SEMS was conceived in February 2008, and had its first standby event in February of 2009. SEMS crews began responding to 911 calls in February of 2010.

Our Mission

Student Emergency Medical Services at Arizona State University exists to provide:

Meet the Staff

Stefanie Schroeder, M.D.Medical Directorstefanie.schroeder@asu.edu

Dr. Schroeder has been the Chief of Clinical Staff at ASU Health Services since July 2004. She was the Medical Director as well as the EMS director of a large volume Emergency Department in Mesa prior to coming to ASU. She is board certified in Emergency Medicine and has practiced Emergency Medicine for 10 years. Besides her administrative duties she sees patients in the Urgent Care Clinic at the ASU Health Service.

Sean McMullen, NREMT‑BChiefsean.mcmullen@asu.edu

Sean McMullen is a Microbiology major at Arizona State University. He is a combat medic (Healthcare Specialist) with the local 996th Area Support Medical Company of the Arizona Army National Guard. He also works for the City of Phoenix Fire Department as a Behavioral Health Specialist.

Sean has been both amazed and profoundly pleased to watch SEMS develop a life of its own. He most looks forward to the day when a new batch of leaders takes the reins of SEMS and proves that the organization will become a permanent part of the ASU campus.

Jeremy Marsh, NREMT‑BDeputy Chief of Personneljmarsh3@asu.edu

Jeremy has attended ASU since Fall 2008 pursuing a degree in Nursing. He has been certified as an EMT since January of 2008 and has worked in one of the five Level 1 Trauma Centers in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Jeremy has over 4 years of combined ED and pre-hospital experience, including ambulance ride alongs with the Julian-Cuyamaca Fire Protection District in Julian, CA. He has been with SEMS since August 2008 as a Captain, and has watched the organization grow in to what it is today.

In his free time, Jeremy enjoys outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and snowboarding. He is one of a small population who has hiked in and out of the Grand Canyon in one day (which he would not recommend). Jeremy also enjoys spending time with his yellow lab, Miles. He looks forward to graduating Nursing School and beginning his career in Critical Care where he one day aspires to be a flight nurse

Jennifer Pahl, NREMT‑BDeputy Chief of Trainingjpahl@asu.edu

Jennifer Pahl has been attending ASU since the Fall semester of 2010. She is currently studying American History and Criminology. She attends classes out of the Polytechnic campus and plans to graduate in December. She has plans to become a federal agent after graduation. She has been an EMT since 2002 when she was a member for the Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad, where she was able to obtain irreplaceable experience and many certifications other than just her EMT. At age 17 she joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served as a Firefighter/EMT and then attended school to become a Health Services Technician, otherwise known as a Corpsman. She has been a member of ASU SEMS since Fall of 2010 and she brings a great wealth of information and experience that she plans to pass along to all the members of the organization.

In her spare time, Jen loves to go 4 wheeling in her Jeep with her husband and dog. She also loves to watch movies and play video games. She is also an avid sports fan and not only loves to watch MMA but also trains in several disciplines. She knows that SEMS will continue to grow after she leaves and is looking forward to her last semester at ASU.
